SOUND HEALING: Understanding the Difference Between Group Sound Baths and One-to-One Sessions

We are often asked, “What is the difference between a Group Sound Bath and a One-to-One Sound Healing Session?”

While both harness the therapeutic power of sound, their intention, experience, and delivery can be quite distinct.

A Group Sound Bath can be a beautiful introduction to Sound Healing, offering a shared experience in which participants are bathed in layers of sound created by instruments such as singing bowls, chimes, and gongs. Because participants are spread throughout a shared space and are not positioned in close proximity to the instruments, the approach naturally differs from that of an individual session.

In group settings, I tend to bring a stronger sense of musicality to the experience, weaving together harmonies, textures, and subtle melodic elements. This creates a rich sonic environment that supports relaxation, mindfulness, and emotional unwinding for the group as a whole.

The intention of a Group Sound Bath is not individual intervention, but rather to allow sound to fill the space and gently guide participants into a restorative state.

A One-to-One Sound Healing Session, on the other hand, offers a personalised journey that works more directly with the individual body and energy system. Singing bowls are positioned in closer proximity to the body to resonate more accurately with their corresponding chakras—energy centres traditionally associated with aspects of our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.  At times, the bowls may also be played above and around the body, creating a more immersive vibrational experience.

This close proximity of sound and vibration can offer a depth of experience that is simply not possible to replicate within a group environment.

Whether experienced in a group setting or through a private session, the power of sound is both subtle and profound. It can help us navigate the stresses of modern life while creating conditions for rest, awareness, and reconnection.

Neither experience is “better” than the other. Group Sound Baths and One-to-One Sound Healing Sessions simply serve different purposes. The most suitable choice often depends on what you need in that moment—a shared space to unwind and reconnect, or an immersive experience focused entirely on you.
